Because we are all legends in our own minds

Given the signing statements that number well over 700 and constitutional law meaning nothing to this junta, would it not be possible then that the 22nd amendment means nothing either?

The 22nd is of course term limits. Now what would it take for Bush to stay in power? An event, give or take the odds on a real October surprise the man can bank on.

This isn't at all theory either, much of it has been put into play and into law. And a reset button is not that far out of the question.

It really isn't a stretch, is it? 4 years ago I might have thought "no way, Americans would NEVER allow it".

But look at all we've allowed. They all ready made an Iran play.

If it does happen, we know what it will look like. Musharraf pretty much gave it a dry run in Pakistan in November. Suspending the constitution, jailing all the lawyers, shutting down the media, declaring martial law. I'd still like to believe that we the people wouldn't allow this to happen. My faith in we the people has been a little shaken lately though.

Indeed, Dani and I have this conversation about the state of the state and even the AP's front run story is Britney Spears.

I believe it actually could happen, there will be some egg on some faces but generally nothing more. I was asked once about it and supply some proof to the thinking that the nation would put up with it.

The answer to all that is fairly simple, not so to a nationalist flag waver and they come in all flavors, but they aren't very quick on the uptake. BUSH IS STILL PRESIDENT!

The US and it citizens are complicit and lack apathy. Or suffer from it. I am at a loss at present as to what shape the nation is in. But we all need to be on the same page and aren't.

I like the idea of Junta. Definition, Government for the few. I apply that to the ideology of the right and their "less government" slogan. Applied to "less for who?".

Assuredly we already know. The poor. Government for the few I can see only applies to the rich of this country.

Nationalist I may never be. Hope to, but I don't see it happening anytime soon.

Nope, Don't buy it.

I have heard this same thing about almost every full term president. This must be some kind of Urban Legend thing that gets drudged up at the end of presidential terms. I heard it about Bill Clinton, and Ronald Reagan.

I think the source is that these presidents, as well as others, opposed the 22nd in some form or fashion, or supported modifying it, and of course this starts people talking. Even WikiPedia shows that.

Well it isn't for lack of trying...

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=hj109-24 and this was as recent as 2005. Oddly enough during Bush's second term. The wording however didn't concern him.

Well with Bush and I don't know about the others, Bush is a glass house by comparison and intriguing. I think re-elected in some form of sick reality show comparison like what will he do next, lets watch.

The odds of him actually doing this are a million to one. But I feel that our current president more so than the rest has set a stage that makes it plausible, unlikely but not quite busted.

And with Bush more so than the rest, his disgust for the constitution is apparent.

The other flip side to this is, would the American populace even care if he did?
